Supporting secure housing: Jaylen's home by the coast
Jaylen’s housing journey has taken her through a series of challenges, but today, she and her family are settled in a place they are proud to call home.
After spending 6 years in their first rental in Adelaide, Jaylen and her husband Levi relocated to a different rental property in another suburb where they lived for three years. The home, however, was ageing and poorly insulated, making it difficult to stay comfortable through seasonal changes. Despite the deteriorating conditions, the rent continued to rise.
“We weren’t sure if we wanted to move,” Jaylen recalls, “but when we found out the rent was going up again, that was the moment we knew it was meant to be.”
Jaylen came across Unity Housing’s new Henley Beach South development ‘Coast’ and submitted an application. Within a week, she was invited to inspect the property. “It all happened so fast,” she says.
Just two weeks later, Jaylen, her husband Levi and son Alfie moved into their brand-new, two-bedroom apartment. The difference was immediate. “Living in a new house compared to an old house is such a difference,” she says. The improved insulation has made the home more comfortable, and the addition of solar panels has helped reduce energy costs, making the home both more sustainable and affordable.
The location has been another highlight. This beachside location offers Jaylen and her family the chance to enjoy Henley’s vibrant coastal community and is close to shops, playground and recreation areas, education and employment. “The location is great,” she says. “Being able to walk by the water and through Henley Square is amazing”.
Jaylen praises her experience with Unity Housing and funding from the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) which supported the Henley Beach South development. After difficulties with previous landlords and real estate agents, she found the Unity Housing team to be “friendly, helpful, and great to deal with.” Meeting the staff in person at the official opening of ‘Coast’ has helped her feel even more supported. “It was great to put faces to the names of those who helped us,” she says.
In a heartwarming twist, Jaylen was reunited with her former neighbour, Shirley. After hearing about Jaylen’s new home, Shirley applied for a vacancy at the same location and was successful. Now neighbours once again, the two continue to support each other and enjoy regular catchups in their new community.
For Jaylen, the move has brought more than just a new address; it has delivered stability, affordability, and a renewed sense of belonging.
