Supporting home ownership: Stella's Story

Stella*, a 53-year-old single mother and migrant Australian, has managed to secure her very first home for herself and her 2 children, after actively searching for a home for 5 years.

Stella shared how challenging the process was before she was able to access the Australian Government Help to Buy Scheme.

“Being a single parent is difficult - banks wouldn’t consider me as I was a single parent of 2 children. The maximum loan amount I was able to get was only $250,000, which was nowhere near enough for a suitable home. At this point I had almost lost hope as I also have no family here apart from my 2 children. Help to Buy was the only avenue I had available to achieve my aspirations to owning my own home.”

The Scheme enabled Stella to buy in an area where her children grew up and in a location that is easy for her to get to work. Within proximity to a tram station, healthcare services and overlooking a huge park, Stella says she loves everything about her new home.

Having achieved the dream of owning her own home, Stella’s fears that she would end up on the street as she became older, have been put to rest with a real sense of security and certainty in owning her own home.
